Our Heritage is Rooted in Plants

The 1940’s was a time of food shortages, malnutrition and soaring commodity prices in Hong Kong. To help those less fortunate, our founder, Dr. K.S. Lo, created the first ready-to-drink soy milk which was an affordable and healthy alternative to dairy milk. Since then, we’ve made it our mission to make nutritious and tasty plant-based food and beverages.

Over the years, we’ve used our expertise to grow our product line, which is now available in about 40 markets with manufacturing facilities in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore, Australia, and the Philippines. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to our founding vision of providing sustainable plant-based beverages and foods which are good for you and the planet while innovating and adapting to new opportunities.

Plants Are Our Friends

  • In general, soy and other plant milks are packed with important nutrients such as protein, unsaturated fats, vitamins and minerals. They are vegan-friendly, free from lactose, dairy and cholesterol.
  • Plant milks are better for the environment as they use less water, less land and emit less carbon than dairy products.

Our Supplier Relationship

The success of our business heavily relies on having a steady supply of quality soybeans, tea leaves, and other plant-based ingredients. We know that there’s a potential for climate-related emergencies, putting our suppliers at the mercy of unstable and extreme weather conditions that can lead to water shortages and soil degradation. Mindful of the environmental challenges, we must also be vigilant to manage possible social and ethical pitfalls that can occur. It is vital for us to work together with our supply chain partners openly and collaboratively in order to maintain our sustainable sourcing and ethical business practices.

We Want Suppliers Who Think Like Us

We select suppliers who demonstrate sound sustainable practices that are aligned with our Supplier Responsibility Principles and have been certified by recognized authorities such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), and the ProTerra Foundation.

Say No to GMO

Our commitment to using non-genetically modified (non-GM) ingredients is well-established, as we use non-GM soybeans to produce all our soy-based beverage and tofu products as dictated in our Non-GM Policy. This policy requires us to be compliant with standards and procedures regarding the review of non-GM certificate/declaration, 3rd party laboratory test reports, regular in-house GM tests, and regular audit on soybean suppliers and other edible raw material suppliers.

The Best Farm is a Sustainable One

In support of sustainable agricultural practices, we have developed the Sustainable Farming Guidelines as a tool to help responsibly procure ingredients. The guidelines clearly define sustainable and responsible sourcing within our value chain. The stipulations are for the control of relevant practices including the proper management of fertilizer, land, water, waste, energy and greenhouse gas emissions, pest, weed and disease, biodiversity, social aspects, and the supplier’s value chain. We have started to implement the guidelines in two select contract Mainland China farms and will expand its application to other farms in the future.

Efficiency Meets Manufacturing

Talking with internal and external stakeholders, it became clear that climate change, emissions, water stewardship, energy efficiency and waste management were fundamental issues to us and our stakeholders.

Resource Management

A big part of the environmental impact of our products arise in primary production. As product sales increase so too does our manufacturing footprint, and so too will our efforts to monitor and responsibly manage our use of precious natural resources, namely water, fuel and electricity as best as we can.

Fuel

Managing the energy that we use helps to reduce both our emission footprint and operational costs. We are committed to the efficient usage of fuel and electricity, and are exploring the adoption of clean energy to reduce our environmental impact.

KPI definition: Reduce fuel used to manufacture each unit of product (Unit: kWh per kg product)

Electricity

Managing the energy that we use helps to reduce both our emission footprint and operational costs. We are committed to the efficient usage of fuel and electricity, and are exploring the adoption of clean energy to reduce our environmental impact.

KPI definition: Reduce electricity used to manufacture each unit of product (Unit: kWh per kg product)

Water

Water is a key ingredient for most of our products as well as for production including heating, cleaning and cooling. We are committed to using water responsibly to contribute to the sustainability and quality of water resources. To manage water usage with an aim to maximize efficiency, we track the use of water to understand usage patterns and adopt reuse and recycling approaches.

It’s All in the Packaging

Our packaging serves as the storage, transportation and delivery system for our products. We place a high degree of care on the hygiene, safety, strength and durability of any packaging materials we use. This involves primary packaging, which is in direct contact with the product, and secondary packaging for transportation and delivery convenience.

We recognize that the waste generated when consumers discard our products has a big impact on the environment and have worked to adopt more efficient and less wasteful alternatives. We also have a dedicated team working on more environmentally friendly alternatives. On the other hand, we know that through collaboration and coordination, the beverage industry and government as well as other stakeholders including consumers, suppliers, retailers, waste collectors and recyclers can do more to reduce this impact.

Guiding our decisions relating to packaging is our Responsible Packaging Policy. This policy aligns with our commitment to reducing the environmental impact of our packaging while safeguarding the quality and safety of our products in four areas: material choice and usage, packaging weight optimization, operations considerations, and innovation.

Packaging plays a critical role in getting food safely to consumers around the world, but it can also impact the planet. What if all food packaging came from plant-based materials and didn’t impact the climate? See Tetra Pak’s vision for the future.

Packaging Management Framework

This framework was developed to determine the best approaches to managing and tracking the performance of our initiatives that aim to reduce our packaging footprint.

Under this Framework, we focus on 3 major packaging materials: carton paper, plastic and aluminum cans, while studying their environmental impact in these areas:

  • Reduction - weight and usage
  • Renewable and recycled sources
  • Recyclability/circularity
  • Remove problematic or unnecessary plastic
